HOW IT WORKS
Most of my editorial work is considered content or development editing. A story that comes to me for editing will be critiqued for both strengths and weaknesses. First off, I want to hear the author’s intent so that I can read with that in mind. What is the author trying to say with this story? What is he or she trying to accomplish? I ask these questions so that both the author and I can work toward making the story as strong as possible.
In practical terms, I work electronically (by email), although I can edit a paper copy if a situation requires it. I critique on all aspects of the story—plot, character, voice, theme, setting. I will let you know what is working, and what needs shoring up or changing. I generally toss out multiple suggestions when I see a problem, and it is up to the author to make changes or not to make changes.
As I read, I make edits and comments on the manuscript using Track Changes. When I’ve finished the edit, I return it to the author with a long, explanatory email. A follow-up exchange of emails for questions and clarifications is expected. I communicate with the author until we are both satisfied with the critique.
With new clients, I often suggest they send a short story or a novel partial (first 50 pages) first, to make sure we click before either of us commits to a full manuscript contract.
My turnaround time varies, depending on my schedule; once I start a project, it’s generally a few days for a short story; a week to ten days for a partial; two weeks to a month for a novel, depending on length.
for SHORT STORIES and short works
$50 for a story up to 20 manuscript pages, plus $1.00 per page beyond that.
for NOVELS or FULL LENGTH MANUSCRIPTS
For longer works, my fees currently range from $2.50-$3.00 per manuscript page (not physical pages), plus a flat $50/per 100 pages.
A standard manuscript page holds 250 words. I determine the number of chargeable pages in a manuscript by dividing overall word count by 250.
This “package” includes the first 12,000 words (about 50 pages) of a manuscript, plus an outline or synopsis, for an an intensive edit/brainstorm. The charge is $150. For a work-in-progress or an early draft, the goal is to insure that the major elements are working and the opening has the necessary hook to draw readers. For a completed draft, this is to polish the pages before submitting to an agent or editor.
Note: If an author comes back to me to edit the rest of the manuscript, I charge a reduced rate to re-read the revised pages.
Contact me by email regarding availability and interest. After a date for submission is agreed upon, send a Word document via email attachment in standard manuscript format: 12 point font, Times New Roman or Courier, double-spaced, one inch margins all around, left justified, paragraph indent, no space between paragraphs.
